Mountains, waterfalls, ocean and kasbahs
The desert is only one direction you can go from Marrakech. Within one to four hours you reach Atlas villages, a 110-metre waterfall, an Atlantic port town and the most famous kasbah in Morocco. This page helps you pick the day trip that fits your time and energy.
Drive time is the biggest difference between these trips, more than the price.
Ourika Valley and the Atlas villages around Imlil. Easy, green and cool in summer, back by late afternoon.
Ouzoud Falls and Essaouira. Full days, but with plenty of time on the spot once you arrive.
Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Spectacular road, very long day.
One pick per destination, chosen by GetYourGuide rating and review count. Each destination page has more options.

The most-booked Ourika day out: a drive into the High Atlas foothills, a stop at a Berber house for tea, then a guided scramble to the waterfalls above Setti Fatma and lunch on a terrace over the river. Back in Marrakech by late afternoon.

By far the most-reviewed waterfall trip from Marrakech. Three hours on the road, then a guided walk around the 110 m falls, a short boat ride to the spray and lunch with a view. Barbary macaques live along the path.

The top-rated way to see Essaouira from Marrakech. Stops at an argan cooperative and the “goats in trees”, then free time in the walled medina and port, with lunch included.

The classic long day over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and the film town of Ouarzazate. Private option available.

More mountain, less crowd. This trip loops through five High Atlas valleys around Asni and Imlil, with walks between villages, wide views of the Toubkal massif and lunch with a local family.

A real hike rather than a sightseeing stroll: a guided climb to a ridge above the Imlil valley with snow-capped peaks in view from December to April, and a homemade lunch in a Berber village.

Almost every tour picks you up from your hotel or the nearest square to your riad between 7 and 8:30 am, travels in an air-conditioned minibus, and returns between 5 and 8 pm. Lunch is either included or bought on the spot for around 10 USD. Group tours fill quickly in spring and autumn, so book a few days ahead; private options cost more but let you leave earlier and skip the shopping stops.
A good week in Marrakech often looks like this: one evening in the Agafay desert, one mountain or waterfall day, one day for Essaouira, and the rest for the medina. If you are going to the Sahara for three days, skip the separate Aït Ben Haddou trip: the desert tours stop there on the way.
For most first-time visitors it is the Ourika Valley or Ouzoud Falls. Ourika is short and relaxing; Ouzoud is longer but more spectacular. Essaouira is best if you want the coast.
No. The real dunes are 7 to 10 hours away. For a desert feel in one day, go to the Agafay desert in the evening.
Group trips to Ourika, Ouzoud and Essaouira usually cost under 25 USD per person. Atlas hikes and private tours cost more. Check live prices on each booking page.
It depends on the tour. Many include lunch; others leave it optional so you can choose a restaurant. The tour description says which.
Yes. They run daily with licensed drivers and guides. Wear good shoes for waterfall paths and follow the guide in the mountains.
