Dinner under the stars in the Agafay desert near Marrakech

Desert Tours from Marrakech

From stone desert to golden dunes

Marrakech sits between two very different deserts: the rocky Agafay plateau forty minutes away and the true Sahara dunes a long day’s drive east. This guide helps you pick the right trip for the time, budget and kind of day you want, then shows the best-rated tours for each.

First decide how much desert you want

Almost every desert tour from Marrakech falls into one of three shapes. Pick the shape first; the tour choice gets easy after that.

An evening in Agafay

Half a day, no early start. Quad or camel at sunset, dinner and music in a camp, back in your riad the same night. Rocky hills rather than dunes, but the Atlas views are spectacular.

A night in a desert camp

Stay in Agafay overnight for the stars, the silence and a sunrise without a long drive. The easiest way to sleep in the desert from Marrakech.

The Sahara dunes

Two or three days on the road for real sand dunes at Zagora or Merzouga. Long drives, unforgettable dunes, and the best choice if “Sahara” is the point of the trip.

Agafay or the Sahara: the honest difference

Agafay is a stone desert: bare, rolling hills of pale earth and rock, about 40 km south-west of Marrakech. There are no sand dunes. What it does have is space, silence, enormous sunsets and, in winter and spring, the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon. It is close enough for an evening trip.

The Sahara dunes are much further. The nearest small dunes are near Zagora, about seven hours away, and the tall golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga take nine to ten hours of driving over the Atlas. That is why Sahara trips from Marrakech take two or three days.

What changes the experience before you book

Sunset or daytime

Most Agafay tours run in the afternoon and evening for a reason: the light. Daytime rides are hotter and flatter in colour. If the tour lets you choose, pick the slot that puts you on the plateau at sunset.

Quad, camel or neither

A quad is the most fun but also the dustiest; camels are slow and photogenic. Families with small children often prefer the camel-only camel ride tours. Thrill-seekers should look at quad biking in its own right.

Group size and camp

The biggest operators run large, lively camps with shows; smaller ones feel quieter. Reviews mention atmosphere more than anything else, so skim the latest ones for the date you want.

What the price covers

Hotel or riad pickup, the activity, dinner and the show are usually included. Drinks, tips and photos taken by the crew are usually extra. Agafay evenings often cost under 50 USD per person, overnight camps roughly 90 to 130 USD and three-day Sahara tours roughly 130 to 180 USD, but live prices change daily.

When to go

Desert tours run all year. October to April is the most comfortable time: warm days, cool evenings and, from December to March, snow on the Atlas. Desert nights can drop close to freezing in winter, so pack a warm layer. June to August brings 40°C afternoons in Marrakech; evening tours are still pleasant, but avoid midday activities. During Ramadan most tours operate normally, sometimes with adjusted dinner times.

Pickup from the medina: how it works

Almost every tour includes pickup in Marrakech, but cars cannot enter most of the medina’s narrow lanes. If you stay in a riad, the operator will name a meeting point nearby, usually a square, a gate such as Bab Doukkala or Bab Ksiba, or a landmark like the Koutoubia. Ask your riad to walk you there the first time, and send the operator your riad’s name after booking so they can choose the closest point. Hotels in Gueliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie are usually picked up at the door.

Desert tours with children

The easiest family options are the Agafay sunset and dinner evenings and the Palmeraie camel rides: short drives, gentle activities and food that children usually enjoy. Quad tours set their own minimum ages for drivers, and young children usually ride as passengers or go on a buggy with a parent. Balloon flights start before dawn, which works for some families and not others. Three-day Sahara tours are best for children who travel well in a car, because two of the three days are long drives.

Fitting the desert into a Marrakech trip

Book weather-dependent activities, like balloon flights, early in your stay so there is time to reschedule.

Questions travellers ask

The Agafay stone desert is about 40 km from Marrakech, roughly 45 minutes by road. The nearest sand dunes are near Zagora, around seven hours away, and the big Merzouga dunes are nine to ten hours away.

Not real Sahara dunes. Agafay has rocky hills, and the Palmeraie has small sandy areas. For proper dunes you need at least a two-day trip to Zagora or a three-day trip to Merzouga.

Agafay evening tours with dinner often cost under 50 USD per person, overnight Agafay camps roughly 90 to 130 USD and three-day Merzouga tours roughly 130 to 180 USD. Live prices are shown on each booking page.

Most tours on this site include pickup and drop-off in Marrakech. In the medina, drivers usually meet you at the nearest square or gate because cars cannot reach most riads.

Yes. Agafay evenings and Palmeraie camel rides work well for families. Quads have minimum ages set by each operator, and three-day Sahara trips involve long drives that young children may find tiring.

Most tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Check the exact policy on the booking page before paying.
